DRUG DESCRIPTION

BACTROBAN NASAL (mupirocin calcium ointment, 2%) contains the dihydrate crystalline calcium hemi-salt of the antibiotic mupirocin. Chemically, it is (?E,2S,3R,4R,5S)-5-[(2S,3S,4S,5S)-2,3-Epoxy-5-hydroxy-4-methylhexyl]tetrahydro-3,4-dihydroxy-?-methyl-2H-pyran-2-crotonic acid, ester with 9-hydroxynonanoic acid, calcium salt (2:1), dihydrate.

The molecular formula of mupirocin calcium is (C26H43O9)2Ca•2H2O, and the molecular weight is 1075.3. The molecular weight of mupirocin free acid is 500.6. The structural formula of mupirocin calcium is:

BACTROBAN NASAL (mupirocin calcium ointment) is a white to off-white ointment that contains 2.15% w/w mupirocin calcium (equivalent to 2.0% pure mupirocin free acid) in a soft white ointment base. The inactive ingredients are paraffin and a mixture of glycerin esters (SOFTISAN® 649).

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using mupirocin nasal and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, stuffy nose, sore throat, bad taste in the mouth, burning/stinging of the nose, or cough may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Seek immediate medical attention if a rash or severe itching occurs.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a new infection (e.g., fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice signs of a new infection.

What is mupirocin nasal (Bactroban Nasal)?

Mupirocin is an antibiotic that treats or prevents infection caused by bacteria.

Mupirocin nasal (for the nose) is used to prevent severe staph infections in patients and healthcare workers who may be at risk of infection during an outbreak within a hospital or other healthcare setting.

Mupirocin nasal may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about mupirocin nasal (Bactroban Nasal)?

Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the instructions on your prescription label.

Mupirocin nasal is usually given for 5 days. To best protect you from infection, use this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Mupirocin nasal will not treat or prevent a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.

Stop using mupirocin nasal and call your doctor at once if you have severe burning or stinging of your nose or eyes.

Do not use other nasal medications at the same time you apply mupirocin nasal.
