DRUG DESCRIPTION

Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide (nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream, ointment) Cream and Ointment for dermatologic use contain the antifungal agent nystatin and the synthetic corticosteroid triamcinolone acetonide.

Nystatin is a polyene antimycotic obtained from Streptomyces noursei. It is a yellow to light tan powder with a cereal-like odor, very slightly soluble in water, and slightly to sparingly soluble in alcohol. Structural formula:

Triamcinolone acetonide is designated chemically as 9-fluoro-11?, 16, 17, 21-tetrahydroxypregna-1, 4-diene-3, 20-dione cyclic 16, 17-acetal with acetone. The white to cream crystalline powder has a slight odor, is practically insoluble in water, and very soluble in alcohol. Structural formula:

Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide (nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream, ointment) Cream is a soft, smooth cream having a light yellow to buff color. Each gram provides 100,000 USP Nystatin units and 1 mg Triamcinolone Acetonide in an aqueous perfumed vanishing cream base with polysorbate-60, aluminum hydroxide, titanium dioxide, glyceryl monostearate, polyethylene glycol monostearate, simethicone emulsion, sorbic acid, propylene glycol, white petrolatum, polyoxyethylene fatty alcohol ether, methylparaben, propylparaben and sorbitol.

Each gram of Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide (nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream, ointment) Ointment provides 100,000 USP Nystatin units and 1 mg Triamcinolone Acetonide in an ointment base of mineral oil and white petrolatum.

SIDE EFFECTS: Skin irritation, burning, or dryness may occur. These effects should lessen in a few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stretch marks, skin thinning/discoloration, acne, increased/unwanted hair growth, "hair bumps" (folliculitis).

Rarely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. This can lead to side effects of too much corticosteroid. These side effects are more likely in children, and in people who use this medication for a long time or over large areas of the skin. Tell your doctor right away if any of the following side effects occur: unusual/extreme tiredness, weight loss, headache, swelling ankles/feet, increased thirst/urination, vision problems.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

What is nystatin and triamcinolone (Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide)?

Nystatin is an antibiotic medication that prevents fungus from growing on your skin.

Triamcinolone is a steroid. It reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness, and swelling.

The combination of nystatin and triamcinolone topical (for the skin) is used to treat skin infections caused by fungus or yeast.

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to nystatin or triamcinolone.

Before using nystatin and triamcinolone, tell your doctor if you have any type of skin infection (especially tuberculosis infection of the skin), or if you have chicken pox or herpes infection (including cold sores).

Also tell your doctor if you have diabetes. Topical steroid medicines absorbed through the skin may increase the glucose (sugar) levels in your blood or urine.

Use this medication exactly as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Do not use the medication in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Topical steroid medicine can be absorbed through the skin, which may cause steroid side effects throughout the body.
